The President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Felix Tshisekedi, met with the US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, in Washington, to discuss a number of files.
The two sides discussed progress in implementing the U.S.-Democratic Republic of the Congo Strategic Partnership Agreement, the situation in eastern DRC, and the U.S. commitment to ensuring full compliance with the Washington Agreements and implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding signed on December 4, on an expanded security partnership with the DRC.
Tshisekedi discussed with Rubio “the progress made in the commitments made under the Washington Peace Agreement, the strategic partnership between the two countries, and the mutual commitment to promoting peace, stability and economic development in the Congo while preserving its sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
President Tshisekedi also met with a number of members of the US Congress, who affirmed “Washington’s readiness to be a stronger partner for the Democratic Republic of the Congo, calling for bipartisan support to fulfill America’s obligations under the agreements, and to take action against those who violated their obligations to deter further violations.”
During the meetings with President Tshisekedi, the two parties discussed the importance of the partnership in the field of minerals and continued investment in revitalizing the Lobito Corridor to enhance mutual economic growth, regional trade, and long-term cooperation between the United States and Africa.
