Ghanaian President, John Dramani Mahama, announced that his country has decided to exit the International Monetary Fund program with “dignity,” saying: “We will leave not as beggars but as partners.”
The Ghanaian president delivered his New Year address to the nation on January 1, 2026, in which he spoke about the situation his administration inherited, saying: “The country faced an economy on its knees, youth unemployment at alarming levels, a crumbling infrastructure, eroding public confidence, and hope fading in the eyes of Ghanaians.”
However, the President highlighted the progress made over the past year, crediting wise management and difficult reforms to stabilize the economy and boost investor confidence.
President Mahama specifically pointed to low inflation and stable currency, saying: “We have brought inflation down from the painful levels of 23% and above by the end of 2024, and we currently hope to see inflation in the single digits, albeit just above 5%.”
He concluded by saying: “We are on the right track to be ranked among the best performers in the world.”
