Today, Monday, January 5, the Supreme Council of State held its session No. (112) with a full quorum (109 members), headed by Dr. Mohamed Takala and in the presence of First Deputy Hassan Habib, Second Deputy Moussa Faraj, and Rapporteur Belkacem Debres, to elect a president and three members of the Council of the High National Elections Commission in accordance with the Abu Znika Agreement.
During the session, 103 of the members present voted, and the second round resulted in the election of Mr. Salah Al-Kamishi as the new Chairman of the Commission’s Board of Directors after obtaining 63 votes compared to 33 votes for his competitor, Al-Aref Al-Tir, thus succeeding former President Imad Al-Sayeh.
The Council is scheduled to complete the election of the remaining members of the Commission Council in an upcoming session to be announced at the end of this week.
The Abu Znika Agreement was signed in Morocco in 2020 between the delegations of the Libyan House of Representatives and the Supreme Council of State, and aims to establish a mechanism for distributing sovereign positions in the Libyan state, including the presidency of the High National Elections Commission, within the framework of efforts to end the political division and rebuild Libyan institutions on consensual foundations.
