Today (Saturday), Ethiopia inaugurated the Aisha-2 wind energy project in the Somali region, in a step that strengthens the country’s move towards renewable energy and supports the national energy security strategy.
Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said in a tweet on his Twitter page that the project is one of the most prominent investments in the clean energy sector.
He explained that the project's annual production capacity is about 467 gigawatts per hour, which provides a reliable and expandable infrastructure to meet the needs of the growing, technology-based Ethiopian economy.
Ahmed stressed on the project that the geographical location of the Aisha Plains, which is classified as one of the most important wind corridors in East Africa, gives the project additional strategic importance, especially due to its proximity to the borders with neighboring countries, which enhances the chances of transforming Ethiopia into a regional center for energy trade.
He said that the project comes within the framework of the Ethiopian government’s commitment to the “destructive” principle, which aims to maximize the benefit of natural resources and transform them into a lever for economic integration and common development in the Horn of Africa region.
