Virunga National Park in North Kivu Province in the Republic of the Congo announced the restoration of control over about 65% of its territory, after a year that witnessed severe security unrest due to armed conflicts and the war led by the M23 movement.

During a press conference held in the city of Beni on February 5, the park administration reviewed the security situation for the year 2025, noting that it had lost control over several areas in the southern and central sectors, which forced it to implement a strategic withdrawal towards the north with the aim of protecting its working teams. Despite these challenges, we contributed to continuing efforts to protect wildlife, and the park confirmed that some areas are still unsafe or difficult to access until now.
