The African member states of the UN Security Council begin their work at the beginning of the new year, as Somalia assumes the presidency of the international organization.

The Somali mission in the United Nations Council considered its rotating presidency a step that reflects its position within the international system and confirms its firm commitment to the principles of the United Nations Charter, especially with regard to the maintenance of international peace and security.

She stressed that during its presidency, Somalia will assume responsibility for leading the work of the Security Council and coordinating its agenda, reflecting its keenness to enhance multilateral cooperation and support diplomatic solutions to global issues of common concern.

The Council also witnessed the return of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Liberia, replacing Algeria and Sierra Leone, after their elections last June, where the Congo received 183 votes, while Liberia received 181 votes out of 193, which reflects broad support within the General Assembly, despite the candidates running the race without competitors in their regional groups.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo returned to the Council more than thirty years after its last participation, as it suffered from a security crisis in the east of the country.
