Djibouti closed its liaison office in Somaliland, and also described Israel's recognition of this breakaway region as a violation of international law, Shabelle TV reported on Wednesday.
Djibouti said that its decision to close the liaison office in Somaliland came after contradictions in its foreign policy and its quest to obtain recognition from Israel, in a step that violates international law.
Djibouti, whose President Ismail Omar is a close ally of Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohammed, was among the countries that strongly opposed Israel's recognition of Somaliland, and Djibouti also raised its objections in the UN Security Council last Monday.
In response, Somaliland confirmed that it had recalled its ambassador to Djibouti, describing the action as “part of the ongoing diplomatic engagements, and in line with established diplomatic practice.”
