The A3 Group of the UN Security Council, which includes the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Somalia and Liberia, expressed its deep concern about the recent developments in the Republic of Venezuela, stressing at the same time its firm commitment to the principles of international law and respect for the sovereignty of states. This came in a joint statement made by the Permanent Representative of Liberia to the United Nations, Ambassador Brown II, during the Security Council briefing on the situation in Venezuela, where he indicated that the group is closely following the current developments based on the recent statement issued by the African Union.

The statement noted the reports related to the detention of President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, in addition to the incidents affecting Venezuelan institutions, considering that these developments represent serious challenges that are not limited to the internal stability of Venezuela, but may have broader repercussions on peace and security in the region.

The A3 Group expressed its appreciation for the briefing provided by the Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, Rosemary DiCarlo. It also welcomed the participation of civil society representatives, the representative of Venezuela, and the countries of the region in the Council session. The statement reaffirmed the A3 Group’s adherence to the principles of the United Nations Charter, foremost of which is respect for national sovereignty, territorial integrity, and non-interference in the internal affairs of states, as they are basic pillars for strengthening regional stability and international peace and security.
