Sadness fell over African media and sports circles after the announcement of the death of Malian journalist and sports critic Mohamed Soumare, who was found dead inside his room in a hotel in the Moroccan capital, Rabat, where he was covering the Africa Cup of Nations.

The death that occurred suddenly on Wednesday raised many questions, as its causes have not yet been determined pending the results of official investigations and medical reports, while no statement has been issued confirming the existence of a criminal suspicion or a clear health reason yet.

Mohamed Soumare is considered one of the most prominent media figures in Mali, as he held important positions, most notably the media officer for Stade Mali Club and head of the marketing, television and media department in the Mali Professional League, in addition to his activity as a journalist and critic specializing in African championships.

His sudden departure was a huge shock among his colleagues in the media and sports community, especially since he was working normally until a few days before his death. The Moroccan authorities are still continuing their investigations to uncover the circumstances of the incident that shook African sports public opinion.
