The Government of Ghana has signed a grant agreement with the People's Republic of China worth US$30 million to support the establishment of a new university in the city of Damongo in the north of the country.

The signing came during a meeting between Ghana's Minister of Finance, Dr. Cassel Ato-Forson, and the outgoing Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, His Excellency Tong Deva. The minister expressed his country's appreciation to President John Dramani Mahama and the Ghanaian people for the role played by the ambassador in strengthening bilateral relations, noting that his short period of work coincided with the conclusion of two important grant agreements for Ghana, including financing a multi-purpose market in Aflao.

Forson stressed that Chinese support reflects the depth of historical relations between the two countries, which date back to the era of President Kwame Nkrumah and Chairman Mao Zedong, stressing the importance of enhancing economic cooperation by reducing exchange losses in bilateral trade by studying the possibility of adopting the Ghanaian cedi and the Chinese renminbi in direct trade settlements.

For his part, Ambassador Tong expressed his gratitude for the cooperation he received during his tenure, congratulating the Minister on the improvement of Ghana's economic performance and stressing his pride in the tangible results achieved in the field of development cooperation between the two countries.
